Buckling resistant strut

A buckling resistant strut with dimensional standard. By splitting a culm into three, these splits can be parallel sawn to a standard width and then screwed into one element, via small pieces of wood.

Space frame model

A Space Frame structure has, simply by its geometry, two grids separated by “pyramids”, fully standardized dimensions. Example from Parametric design with Rhino/Grasshopper.

Conflicts with industrial materials:

Door perspective

Industrial-made doors and windows, mostly with straight edges, are difficult to combine with the natural curvature of bamboo poles.

Fixed door detail

To combine the best of the two worlds - a comfortable aluminium window, easy to lock, mosquito safe … - and the beauty of a softly curved bamboo culm, you can place a few intermediate pieces of wood in between.

Doorframe top view

Limited cuts in the bamboo, without jeopardizing structural integrity, allow screw access from all sides.
Gaps are easily stuffed with foam rubber or natural fibers.

You can simply let the bamboo grow up in a real steel RHS, where the interior measure becomes the external measure for the Bamboo RHS!

A research for the right bamboo species for the best "RHS performance" is recommended.
