The most common nowadays is some variety of planar elements:

  • Coated-metal-corrosion-protected
  • Aluminium alloys
  • Tar-paper glued on board
  • Tiled roofs
  • Shingles
  • Reinforced concrete

Double curved roofs cannot be covered with regular planar materials, only with shingles.

Bamboo-shingles from flattened culms. Unfortunately, as exposed to rains and UV-radiation from the sun, they will not last for a long time.

Double curved roofs....WIP=Work In Progress*

Rhino roof models
With a 3D-CAD like Rhino or Microstation (Bentley) you create intuitively two different curves and make a "loft" in between them.

From a Rhino 8 training video.
To secure a rain-proof cover, you probably need some sort of bitumen material - or growing live grass!

Architect: Ingemar Saevfors.

Sometimes the roof shape is important for the cultural integration.
Hyperbolic roof

Hyperbolic Paraboloid roof with half-in-half joints.

This structure can actually be built with rectilinear elements! - but the surface is still double curved!
